Who we are
Our Story
A drawer full of plain white socks and a craving for something more - that's where it began.
A New City. A Missing Colour.
Lei Lei arrived in Vancouver in 2019, trading the crowded, colourful streets of her home city for the mountains, the ocean, and the impossible greenness of the Pacific Northwest. Like many newcomers, she fell in love with the city fast - the seaplanes buzzing low over the harbour, the great blue herons standing perfectly still in Stanley Park, the way every neighbourhood felt like a different country sharing the same postcode.
But something was missing. Back home, vibrant socks were everywhere - a small, everyday way to show your personality to the world. In Vancouver she found mostly grey, navy, and white. Functional. Forgettable.
She wanted socks that actually said something. Socks that captured the place she was falling in love with and the culture she carried with her. So she sat down with graph paper and a set of coloured pens, and she started drawing.
From Graph Paper to the Farmer's Market.
The first sketches were rough. A bagel with a goofy expression. A koi fish mid-leap. A seaplane lifting off the water. Lei Lei sent photos to a friend who was a graphic artist in Hong Kong. Within a week, the sketches had become proper illustrations - bold, clean, a little bit cheeky.
She found a small production run through a partner her friend recommended. Fifty pairs. Then a hundred. A popup table at a local farmer's market on a grey Saturday in October sold out before noon. By the end of the day she had a waitlist and a business plan forming in her head.
What had started as a personal project was becoming something else entirely.
An International Crew, One Shared Vision.
Lei Lei Socks has never been a one-person operation. From the very beginning it was built on collaboration - designers in Vancouver, Hong Kong, Manila, and Seoul each bringing their own visual language and cultural reference points to every collection.
Our lead illustrator grew up near the Yangtze River and draws animals the way a calligrapher writes characters - with intention and weight. Our colour director spent ten years in Seoul's streetwear scene before moving to East Vancouver. Our production partner has been with us since the very first run and knows the difference between a sock that looks good on a website and one that actually feels right at the end of a long day.
We stay small on purpose. It keeps us fast, honest, and close to the people who wear our socks.
Why Socks? Because Nobody Sees Them - Until They Do.
Socks are the one item of clothing that stays almost entirely hidden. They live under your desk, under your jeans, under the table at a dinner party. And then - at exactly the right moment - someone catches a flash of colour and everything stops. A conversation starts. A stranger becomes a friend. A boring meeting becomes slightly less boring.
That moment is what we design for.
But beautiful socks that feel terrible are just socks with a good PR team. We obsessed over the fabric blend - a premium mix of combed cotton, nylon, and spandex chosen for breathability, lasting shape, and the kind of cushioning that makes a full day on your feet feel significantly less like a full day on your feet. Every design goes through wear testing before it ships. No exceptions.
Every Pair Tells a Story.
Our collections are drawn from the things that make Vancouver strange and wonderful and completely itself. The Canada geese that will absolutely not move out of your way. The raccoons who have clearly unionised. The koi ponds tucked behind garden walls in Kerrisdale. The seaplanes. The bears on the ski hills. The rain - always the rain - and the particular joy of being dry and warm while it falls.
We also draw from further afield. Dragons from the tradition our founder grew up with. Patterns inspired by Korean pojagi textiles. Colour combinations borrowed from Philippine weaving. Every collection is a collaboration between where we come from and where we've landed.
We release new designs in small batches. When something sells out, it's usually gone. We've learned not to do unlimited runs - there's something that matters about knowing your pair is one of a limited number in the world.
Built to Move. Designed to Last.
Vancouver is a city that doesn't stop. Hiking the Chief at dawn. Cycling the seawall in the rain. Skateboarding through Gastown. Brunch in Commercial Drive followed by a gallery in Mount Pleasant. Our socks are built for all of it - with enough durability to handle real use and enough style to work whether you're on a trail or at a table.
Reinforced heel and toe. Seamless toe construction. Mid-weight cushioning that works from the gym to the office. Machine washable - cold, gentle cycle, out of the dryer looking exactly as they went in.
We design for people who are actually living in their clothes, not just wearing them.
Still Just Getting Started.
We're working on our most ambitious collection yet - designs that push further into the cultural overlap between East and West that defines Vancouver's character. New materials. Improved packaging. Partnerships with local artists who are doing work we've been fans of for years.
We're also taking sustainability seriously in a way that goes beyond labels. That means looking hard at our supply chain, reducing packaging waste, and building toward a take-back program for worn-out pairs. We're not there yet. We'll tell you when we are.
The only thing that won't change is the reason we started. Socks should make you smile - when you put them on in the morning, and when someone spots them across the room.
"From the drawer of plain white socks to your doorstep - thank you for being part of the story."
