Sustainability

Why It Matters to Us

At Lei Lei Socks, we believe that what you wear should feel good in every sense — on your feet, and on your conscience. The fashion industry generates enormous textile waste each year, and even small accessory brands play a role in that footprint. We started asking hard questions early: What goes into our socks? Where does it come from? What happens when a pair reaches the end of its life?

We don't have all the answers yet, but we're committed to asking the right questions and acting on what we learn — one pair at a time.

Combed Cotton: A Cleaner Fibre

All Lei Lei Socks are made from 80% combed cotton · 17% polyamide · 3% elastane. The choice of combed cotton over conventional cotton is intentional.

  • Less fibre waste at the mill: The combing process removes short, weak fibres before spinning. This creates a smoother, stronger yarn — and reduces the number of times a sock needs to be replaced, meaning fewer socks in landfill over time.
  • Longer lifespan, lower footprint: Because combed cotton is more durable than standard cotton, each pair lasts longer. A sock that survives 200 washes instead of 80 cuts your per-wear environmental cost by more than half.
  • Softer without synthetic coatings: The smoothness comes from the fibre itself, not chemical softening agents that wash off into waterways.

Low-Impact Dyes

Our prints use OEKO-TEX® certified, low-impact dyes — free from harmful substances and tested against a list of over 100 restricted chemicals. OEKO-TEX® certification means every component of our socks, from the yarn to the dye, meets strict human-ecological standards.

Low-impact dyes require less water and fewer fixatives to bond to the fabric than conventional reactive dyes. The result is vibrant colour that stays true wash after wash, without the chemical runoff associated with standard dyeing processes.

Reducing Textile Waste

Textile waste is one of the fastest-growing waste streams globally. We approach this from two directions: making socks that last longer, and making it easier for you to care for them properly.

  • Built to last: Reinforced heel and toe zones extend wear life in the areas most prone to thinning and holes.
  • Care that preserves: Our Care Instructions are written to help you get the maximum life out of every pair — because the most sustainable sock is the one you already own.
  • Right-sized production: We produce in small, deliberate batches to avoid overstocking. Unsold inventory that gets written off and destroyed is waste we work hard to avoid.
  • Minimal packaging: Our packaging uses recycled cardboard and soy-based inks. We've eliminated single-use plastic from our standard packaging entirely.

Where We're Headed

Sustainability isn't a box to check — it's an ongoing process. Here's what we're actively working on:

  • Exploring organic cotton blends to reduce pesticide use at the farm level
  • Researching a sock take-back programme to divert worn-out pairs from landfill into industrial textile recycling
  • Moving toward 100% recycled poly mailers as supply becomes more accessible at our scale
  • Publishing an annual impact report to hold ourselves accountable publicly

We'll update this page as we make progress. If you have ideas, partnerships to propose, or questions about our practices, we'd love to hear from you at [email protected].

Your Role

The most impactful thing you can do is take care of the socks you already own. Wash cold, air dry when you can, and repair before replacing. A well-cared-for pair of Lei Lei Socks can last years — and every year of extra life is a pair that doesn't need to be made, shipped, or discarded.

Thank you for being thoughtful about what you buy, and who you buy it from.
